The Midnight expansion brings big changes to Affliction Warlocks. Both the class tree and the spec tree have been rebuilt, and we are also getting a fourth branch for every Hero talent tree. This post walks through every update, every spell, and every talent that was mentioned. It is not a full guide, but it gives a clear picture of where the spec is heading.
Core Class Changes
Affliction Warlock has had a full talent overhaul. Most of the changes are built around Curses, crowd control, and mobility.
A new group of Pact talents now act like stances. They replace Curse of Weakness with either Curse of Tongues or Curse of Exhaustion. We also get Foul Mouth, a talent that makes your chosen Curse hit a second target within 10 yards.
There is a choice node between Howl of Terror and Shadowfury, and Demonic Gateway has moved deeper in the tree. A new supporting talent lets us use the Gateway twice before the cooldown starts. We also get Blight of Weakness, an AoE debuff that cannot be used with other Curses but gives an empowered effect on a cooldown.
Right now it seems like Curse of Tongues will be the default pick in most cases, because Curse of Weakness and Curse of Exhaustion offer less value outside of special situations. Warlock utility still feels a little low, especially in Mythic+, and Howl of Terror suffers from a target cap that limits its impact.
Affliction Spec Tree Changes
The Affliction tree has been reworked from top to bottom. Our shard spenders now change depending on the type of fight:
- Unstable Affliction for single target
- Seed of Corruption for AoE
This means Malefic Rapture is being removed. We also see the return of Sow the Seeds.
Several classic spells are gone: Shadow Embrace, Vile Taint, Phantom Singularity, Tormented Crescendo, and Oblivion have been removed.
Agony now stacks to 6, and gets help from Sudden Onset and Shared Agony, which help reduce the long ramp time.
Malefic Grasp comes back as a capstone that procs from Nightfall, and we also get new apex talents called Shadow of Nathreza, all tied to bigger Haunt damage.
Overview Table — Removed vs Added
| Removed Spells/Talents |
|---|
| Malefic Rapture |
| Shadow Embrace |
| Vile Taint |
| Phantom Singularity |
| Tormented Crescendo |
| Oblivion |
Developer Notes Summary
Blizzard explains that Malefic Rapture created too many rules about when to spend Soul Shards. Many DoTs made its damage feel diluted. With the return of Unstable Affliction and Seed of Corruption, the goal is simple: most of the time, when you get a shard, you spend it right away unless you are saving for Darkglare.
The devs also want fewer stacking damage rules. This is why Shadow Embrace and the old Contagion effect from Unstable Affliction are gone. Now Haunt marks your priority target, while Nightfall gains more value with talents like Malefic Grasp and Nocturnal Yield.
Hero Talent Trees
Only the fourth column descriptions are available, but we do know the themes and mechanics for both trees.
Hellcaller Hero Talents
Hellcaller is all about Shadowflame and a new DoT that replaces Corruption for Affliction. The center of the tree is Wither, which works with old Tormented Crescendo procs and feeds into burst windows built around Malevolence. Wither can also become “acute,” dealing extra damage.
This Hero tree keeps a simple DoT-heavy playstyle, and talents like Absolute Corruption can make upkeep much easier.
Defensive and utility talents are light. We do get Curse of the Satyr, which combines both Curse of Weakness and Curse of Tongues, and a talent that curses all enemies in 30 yards during Unending Resolve, though this has low uptime. Zevrim’s Resilience and Illhoof’s Design offer very small defensive value, and Illhoof’s Design may even feel harmful in some cases.
Soul Harvester Hero Talents
The Soul Harvester Hero tree focuses on shard cost reduction, strong spenders, and a new DoT called Soul Anathema.
This tree has strong synergy with Nightfall, thanks to:
In AoE, Soul Harvester is not as passive as Hellcaller, but talents like Cunning Cruelty and stronger spender play help keep it competitive.
Defensive and utility options include Gorebound Fortitude, which gives free Soulburn, Healthstones, and Friends In Dark Places, which buffs Dark Pact. Eternal Servitude improves pet resummoning, and Gorefiend’s Resolve upgrades your combat resurrection.
Tier Set Bonuses
Season 1 brings simple but strong bonuses:
Tier Bonuses Table
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| 2-piece | Unstable Affliction and Seed of Corruption deal 10% more damage. |
| 4-piece | Agony starts with 2 extra stacks and deals 20% more damage. |
These bonuses work with all talent builds. The 2-piece gives a big boost to both shard spenders. The 4-piece helps dungeons a lot, especially when paired with Sudden Onset, letting your Agony start at 5 out of 6 stacks.
How Good Is the Tier Set?
If Blizzard tunes it to give around a 10–15% gain between both bonuses, this set should perform well in both single target and multi-target. The extra Agony value will matter even more in big AoE pulls.
Final Thoughts
Affliction in Midnight leans back into full DoT gameplay. Unstable Affliction and Seed of Corruption simplify shard spending. Haunt and Nightfall become key focus points. The Hero trees give two very different styles: a DoT-heavy Shadowflame path with Hellcaller, and a fast, proc-heavy, spender-focused path with Soul Harvester.
Every talent and spell listed shows that Blizzard wants Affliction to be easier to read, smoother to play, and still strong in damage-over-time identity.
