The Midnight expansion brings a fresh wave of updates for Frost Death Knights, and this blog will walk you through all of it in a calm and easy way. This is not a final launch guide. It is a place to follow how the spec feels, how it plays on the Alpha, and what you can expect when the expansion arrives.
As Midnight moves through the Alpha stage, things may shift. Some numbers may go up or down. New ideas may appear. But for now, here is a full look at what has changed, why it matters, and how the spec seems to be shaping up.
What Midnight Is Changing
The dev team explained early on that their main goal is to polish the two big Frost playstyles so both can work well in single target. This means they want the Frostbane path to keep up with the Breath of Sindragosa path. One way they plan to do this is by letting Obliterate deal part frost damage. This lets them tune the gap between normal hits and Killing Machine hits in a smoother, cleaner way.
Even though these ideas are big for balance, the spec itself has not changed much on the surface. Frost already had a big rework during The War Within, so the Midnight update builds on that rather than tearing it down again.
Core Changes in the Spec
The basic feel of Frost stays the same, but there are a few things worth pointing out. First, we now have new Apex talents that push us to use Frostwyrm’s Fury more often. The spell has always felt cool, but it did not always hit hard enough or flow well in the rotation. These new talents help fix that.
We also see small boosts such as stronger Shattering Blade and the new frost-damage part added to Obliterate by default. These changes may look small, but together they help smooth out the way the spec plays.
Apex Talents and the Push Toward Frostwyrm’s Fury
Midnight adds three optional talents as we level to 80. All three are tied to Frostwyrm’s Fury, and they make the button feel far more exciting.
The first talent boosts the Wyrm’s first hit by a huge amount and gives you a burst of haste. This makes the spell feel strong even when you only hit one target. The next talent lets the spell make Killing Machine and Runic Power, which stops it from feeling like an empty global. The last talent lets you cast the Wyrm a second time at half strength. When you add all three talents together, your Wyrm becomes a major part of your burst.
Another new talent in the Deathbringer tree, Echoing Fury, gives you two stacks of Exterminate every time you use Frostwyrm’s Fury. This opens a strong burst path where you cast your Wyrm, then use several heavy Obliterate hits in a row.
Here is a simple table showing how these pieces work together:
| Talent or Effect | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Chosen of Frostbrood | Big first-hit buff and haste gain |
| Apex #2 | Gives Runic Power + Killing Machine |
| Apex #3 | Lets you cast Wyrm again at half power |
| Echoing Fury | Gives two Exterminate stacks when Wyrm is used |
All of these effects make the spec feel like it has stronger, cleaner burst windows.
Tuning and Quality-of-Life Updates
One of the nicest changes is that Obliterate now deals some frost damage built in. This gives devs a simple way to tune both normal hits and Killing Machine hits without breaking other parts of the kit. At the start of the expansion, this will matter a lot because we will have far more “naked” Obliterate casts.
Another great change is to Frostbane. When it eats Razorice stacks, it now hits your main target much harder than before. This helps the playstyle stand on its own and gives single-target more punch.
There is also a huge upgrade to Empower Rune Weapon. It is now instant and no longer fires a projectile. This removes delay issues and makes your rotation smoother. It may sound small, but for Frost, a half-second delay can break the flow of your burst window.
Class Tree Adjustments
Frost sees a few helpful changes in the class tree. New nodes such as Blood Bond, Death Defiance, and Death Notes add extra defense and more choice. The update also makes it easier to reach Death Pact, which was often ignored before.
Some talents were moved to better spots, like Death’s Reach now pairing well as a choice with Asphyxiate. Mobility tools like Wraith Walk changed position too, giving us easier access to movement when needed. A few defensive talents were trimmed, but the loss is not large.
New Tier Set for Frost
The new Season 1 set leans hard into Empower Rune Weapon. The two-piece bonus boosts Obliterate and Frostscythe each time you use it. The four-piece bonus charges the spell faster and lets you press your first Empower Rune Weapon inside Pillar of Frost without waiting on its cooldown.
This means we get more burst windows, more control, and more strings of fast Obliterate hits. Since the spell was already strong, these bonuses push it even higher.
