How To Play Survival Hunter

Survival Hunter in Mythic+ is a wild ride of explosive gameplay, melee skirmishing, and smart cooldown usage. The Pack Leader build focuses on leveraging burst windows through Coordinated Assault, while weaving in a potent mix of passive cleave, CDR effects, and careful ability prioritization.

Let’s break down how to unleash your inner apex predator and dominate dungeons as a Survival Hunter with Pack Leader.

Coordinated Assault Assault

Your number one priority with Pack Leader is getting Coordinated Assault rolling as soon as possible.

Why? Because this triggers Lead From the Front, which then sets off a chain reaction with Howl of the Pack Leader. When paired with other burst tools like Spearhead or Fury of the Eagle, you’ll enter a burst phase that melts bosses and elites alike.

Single Target Rotation:

Survival’s single-target gameplay isn’t a static rotation—it’s a priority list. Each GCD (Global Cooldown) should be spent pressing the highest value button available, top to bottom.

Dire Summons (greatly enhances Kill Command and Mongoose Bite)

Because of this synergy, Kill Shot and Explosive Shot fall to the bottom of the list—they’re not bad, but they’re noticeably less efficient. That said, don’t ignore them completely. Use them tactically to dip in and out of melee range, letting you dodge mechanics while keeping your uptime high.

AoE Rotation:

In AoE, Pack Leader really shines with passive cleave and faster Wildfire Bomb access.

Thanks to Frenzy Strikes and Explosive Shot becoming more relevant, your AoE rotation gets much more crowded. Whether you’re using Sentinel or Pack Leader, the priority remains largely the same—but Pack Leader gives a unique twist by empowering Howl of the Pack Leader and Pack Mentality.

Butchery vs. Flanking Strike

One standout trait of Pack Leader is that it doesn’t rely on Butchery. In fact, Butchery receives no major enhancements in this tree. This opens up a playstyle where you run Flanking Strike instead.

Butchery = higher raw AoE output.
Flanking Strike = better priority target damage.

In Mythic+, this means Flanking Strike can help you deal with minibosses and dungeon bosses faster, potentially leading to quicker key times. Still, for strict AoE scenarios, Butchery remains king.

Pack Leader Notes:

Here’s where things get spicy.

Howl of the Pack Leader triggers 3 Hogstrider charges. The first two are high priority because they can be overwritten by the next charge. The third charge is more forgiving—you can hold it up to 20 seconds without penalty. Usually, your regular rotation will naturally consume it.
Each Hogstrider increases your odds of lining up with Strike it Rich, adding a delicious layer of RNG payoff.
Fury of the Eagle hits like a truck. Delay it if needed to align with future Coordinated Assault windows, but don’t sit on it too long or you’ll lose out on total casts.
Tip of the Spear? Forget about micromanaging it. With all the cooldown reduction effects flying around from Pack Mentality, Lunge, Frenzy Strikes, and Bombardier, you’ll “accidentally” tip most of your Wildfire Bombs anyway.

Also, Symbiotic Adrenaline doesn’t boost the periodic damage portion of Wildfire Bomb, so waiting for Tip of the Spear often just slows you down. Keep your bomb flow smooth and frequent—it’s more damage over time.

Rotation Priority

Single Target (*Note Apply Hunter’s Mark to highest priority target on pull).

Cast Kill Command regardless of focus if any of the beasts from Howl of the Pack Leader are available.
Cast Mongoose Bite to apply Serpent Sting if it isn’t currently ticking.
Cast Butchery to apply Merciless Blow.
Cast Coordinated Assault if you have no remaining Wildfire Bomb charges.
Cast Mongoose Bite with Tip of the Spear to consume Strike it Rich.
Cast Fury of the Eagle if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend, and you won’t need Fury of the Eagle for AoE in the near future.
Cast Wildfire Bomb.
Cast Mongoose Bite if Howl of the Pack Leader is about to come off cooldown.
Cast Kill Command if you will not over-cap the Focus it generates.
Cast Mongoose Bite.
Cast Kill Shot if you do not have any focus for Mongoose Bite.
Cast Explosive Shot if you do not have any focus for Mongoose Bite.

AOE

General Tips

Avoid Wasting Resources

Manage Tip of the Spear carefully by empowering high-impact abilities like Wildfire Bomb, Explosive Shot, Kill Shot, and Flanking Strike. Don’t let it overcap, and use Kill Command and Flanking Strike wisely to maintain both Tip of the Spear and Focus.

Keep Abilities on CD

Abilities like Wildfire Bomb, Explosive Shot, and Flanking Strike are significantly stronger than your core builders. Thanks to cooldown reduction effects from talents like Frenzy Strikes and Lunge, you should aim to keep these on cooldown to maximize throughput.

Use Procs

Talents like Deathblow, Grenade Juggler, and Kill Command resets provide powerful procs that demand quick reactions. Properly leveraging these procs is key to maximizing Focus generation and maintaining a fluid, high-damage rotation.

Stat Priority

Haste: Increases attack speed and spell casting speed. This also applies to pets.
Critical Strike: Chance for extra effectiveness on attacks and heals (double damage/healing).
Mastery: Increases the effectiveness of Mastery: Spirit Bond.
Versatility: Increases damage and healing, and reduces damage taken.

1. Agility- As with all specs, main stat will be top priority.

2. Mastery – Boosts all damage and healing received via Spirit Bond. Solid stat, especially as a secondary consideration when paired with high item level gear.

3. Haste – Especially valuable in Pack Leader builds due to synergy with Howl of the Pack Leader and Dire Summons. Increases your attack speed and ability cooldown recovery, making it a strong contender alongside Critical Strike.

4. Critical Strike – Highly prioritized, particularly because of Flanker’s Advantage, which boosts Tip of the Spear damage and caps its scaling at 50% crit chance. Aim for this breakpoint to maximize value.

5. Versatility – Offers consistent damage and survivability benefits, but generally falls behind Haste, Crit, and Mastery in terms of performance. Still useful, but not a priority.
